On the sidelines of the 2024 MEDays, former Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe shared his views on the impact of the Royal Vision for the Atlantic and transformative structural projects like the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, which he considers game-changing for Africa.
"The Royal Vision for the Atlantic is an innovative initiative driving development for Africa," stated Laurent Lamothe during the 16th edition of the MEDays forum. He highlighted flagship projects, such as the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, emphasizing their transformative potential, not just for the thirteen coastal nations involved, but for the entire continent.
According to him, this gas pipeline, which will connect Nigeria to Morocco with direct access to Europe, aims to ensure sustainable energy security for the participating nations while fostering economic opportunities for youth, startups, and local businesses. "This project embodies a strategic approach to African development, integrating economic, political, and social perspectives," he stressed.
Morocco, a Key Player in Regional Development
The former Prime Minister also underscored Morocco's pivotal role in the continent's development and its specific contributions to Haiti. He proudly recalled his decision to recognize the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara during his tenure as head of government. "It was my best decision," he stated, while also commending Morocco’s solidarity with Haiti.
He highlighted that Morocco continues to educate numerous young Haitians at its universities, equipping them with the skills needed to contribute to their nation's development. "These initiatives showcase Moroccan governance focused on knowledge-sharing and South-South cooperation, serving as a model to follow," he noted.
Governance, the Key to Success
Laurent Lamothe emphasized the critical importance of governance in the success of the Atlantic initiative. "With good governance and aligned public policies, success is assured. Conversely, poor governance jeopardizes even the most ambitious projects," he warned.
For him, public policies play a decisive role in ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of initiatives, whether in energy, education, or economics. "Morocco exemplifies visionary governance, capable of mobilizing resources and fostering positive regional dynamics," he concluded.
