Kenya has a new Vice President. Abraham Kithure Kindiki, former Minister of the Interior, was sworn in on Friday, November 1, in Nairobi. His predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, was removed by the Senate two weeks ago due to allegations of corruption and incitement of ethnic division.
The new Vice President, Kithure Kindiki, took the oath after a court lifted orders blocking his inauguration following weeks of legal challenges from his predecessor, who was ousted by Parliament last month.
The Senate voted in October to remove Rigathi Gachagua, the former Vice President, accusing him of gross constitutional violations and incitement to ethnic hatred—allegations he denies, claiming they are politically motivated.
Speaking after Kindiki’s swearing-in, Kenyan President William Ruto urged his new Vice President to "serve the Kenyan people equally, both those who voted for us and those who did not. The government of Kenya belongs equally to all citizens."
