Macky Sall steps down from his role as Special Envoy for the Paris Pact. The Senegalese presidential candidate officially informed the French president of his decision.

In a letter addressed to Emmanuel Macron, Macky Sall explained that he made this decision "to avoid any conflict of interest." The former Senegalese president wants to have full freedom to return to the political scene, six months after leaving the highest office in April 2024.

The former head of state (2012-2024) had been appointed by President Macron as Special Envoy for the Paris Pact in November 2023, just before the end of his second term. "As you probably know, the circumstances of Senegalese political life, following the dissolution of the National Assembly, have led me to be named the top candidate for the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition in the legislative elections scheduled for November 17, 2024," wrote the former Senegalese president, adding, "Under these conditions, and to avoid any risk of incompatibility or conflict of interest, I would like to inform you that I have decided to step down from my role as Special Envoy for the Paris Pact for People and the Planet, effective October 9, after the Hamburg summit on sustainability for which I had already committed."

Macky Sall was named this week as the top candidate for the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition (opposition) in the legislative elections on November 17 in Senegal.

The Takku Wallu Senegal coalition includes, among others, the Alliance for the Republic (APR), founded by Macky Sall, and the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) of Karim Wade, son of former president Abdoulaye Wade.
