Guinea has regained its place within the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF). Three years ago, the country was suspended following the coup that ousted Alpha Condé from power.
The decision to reintegrate the country into the International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF) was made during an extraordinary session of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie (CPF), chaired by OIF’s Secretary General, Rwandan Louise Mushikiwabo.
“This decision is part of a new monitoring and evaluation mechanism adopted last June by the Permanent Council of La Francophonie, aimed at gradually restoring the participation of suspended States based on progress observed in the restoration of constitutional order and respect for rights and freedoms,” the OIF stated.
A key factor in this reintegration is the presence of several OIF experts in Conakry, who are assisting the country, particularly in drafting its new constitution, managing the electoral register, as well as reforming the electoral body and regulating the media.
“What was decisive in the States' decision was recognizing Guinea's involvement and commitment to emerging from the crisis and returning to constitutional order. Guinea has always sought the support of La Francophonie,” the OIF added.
After its reintegration, Guinea will participate in the upcoming Francophonie Summit, which will take place on October 4 and 5, 2024, in France.
