Morocco is participating, from October 21 to 23 in New York, in joint meetings of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), aimed at strengthening cooperation on peace and security across the African continent.
Led by Mohammed Arrouchi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the AU and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the Moroccan delegation is taking part in discussions aimed at strengthening conflict prevention and peacekeeping mechanisms.
During the 9th Annual Consultative Meeting between the PSC and the PBC, held on Wednesday, discussions focused on strengthening the partnership between the two bodies, regional approaches to peacebuilding and financing mechanisms, with particular attention to the Central African Republic.
Speaking on financing and partnerships, Mohammed Arrouchi outlined Morocco's vision, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, for lasting peace based on African-led solutions, stronger national ownership and an integrated approach linking peace, security and development.
The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of African solidarity and partnerships built on trust and shared responsibility. In this context, he recalled the African Union Conference on the Peace, Security and Development Nexus, held in Tangier in 2022, as well as the Kingdom's involvement in peacekeeping operations and its contribution to the AU Peace Fund.
The Moroccan representative called for predictable, sustainable and coherent financing aligned with the priorities set by the countries concerned. He particularly stressed the need to improve complementarity among the various funding instruments, including the UN Peacebuilding Fund, the AU Peace Fund, bilateral partners, and financial and development institutions.
He also highlighted the importance of anticipating needs during transition periods and preserving national capacities, while strengthening coordination to prevent fragmented efforts and overlapping initiatives.
The meetings will continue with the 11th Joint Informal Seminar between the PSC and the UNSC, followed by the 20th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting of the two bodies. Discussions will focus in particular on AU peace support operations, the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2719, youth, peace and security, counterterrorism efforts in Africa, and the protection of children in armed conflicts.
Through its participation, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism and stronger cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations to promote peace and stability across Africa.
