The "Global South" is at the heart of the discussions at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), taking place in Beijing from September 4 to 6, 2024.

The work of FOCAC 2024 began on Wednesday, September 4, in Beijing, following a ministerial meeting the previous day that set the stage for greater convergence of visions. The "Global South" appears to be a central theme that will feature prominently in the discussions.

From the outset, Beijing reaffirmed its commitment to building a shared future with Africa, based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation. This year, the focus is on industrialization, healthcare cooperation, and combating climate change. These priorities reflect China's intention to address the most pressing needs of African countries while strengthening its influence on the continent.

The Chinese Foreign Minister had set the tone during the ministerial meeting preceding FOCAC. Co-chairing this meeting with Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall, Wang Yi emphasized the growing importance of cooperation between China and African countries in a context of shifting international relations and the rise of emerging economies.

In his speech, the Chinese diplomat emphasized China's commitment to the development of Global South countries, stating that FOCAC represents a crucial platform for strengthening economic, political, and cultural ties between China and the African continent. He highlighted that China-Africa cooperation is not only a pillar of Chinese foreign policy but also a model of mutually beneficial partnership for developing countries.

African representatives will also make their voices heard.
