The incumbent President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, has announced his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for June 29.

Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who is soon to complete his term that began in 2019, officially announced his candidacy for a second term on Wednesday, April 24. The Mauritanian presidential election is set for June 29.

"I deemed it appropriate to address you directly, dear compatriots, through this letter, to inform you of my decision to present myself before you, so that you may renew your trust in me for a new term," he emphasized in a letter distributed to the media.

As the favorite in the election, he will face his main rival, who finished second in the 2019 presidential election, Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid. This human rights activist also announced his candidacy on Wednesday.

Ghazouani, the current President of the African Union, has pledged to strengthen national unity, improve living conditions for the impoverished, ensure security and stability, and combat corruption and the embezzlement of public funds.

The official election campaign will begin on Friday, June 14 at midnight and end on Thursday, June 27 at midnight.
