The new Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, appointed Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister just hours after his inauguration as the head of the country on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

The decree appointing Ousmane Sonko to the Premiership by Bassirou Diomaye Faye was read on the Senegalese national channel immediately after the power transfer was carried out between the new president and his predecessor.

"I understand the significance of the trust President Faye has placed in me. I thank him and guarantee him my loyalty and dedication," declared Ousmane Sonko.

He is the founder of the party of African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Brotherhood (Pastef).

Sonko was the candidate of this new political formation for the supreme position, but he was struck with ineligibility by the judiciary, which had paved the way for the presidential palace to Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

"During the meeting that concluded our electoral campaign, I said that we are all working to elect President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. It will not be a question of letting him assume this responsibility alone. I would like to tell the Senegalese, everyone, wherever they are, that this project is theirs. We will give everything we have and spare no effort so that we can achieve the goals we have set for Senegal and not just for the president," stressed the new Prime Minister.
