Morocco has once again earned recognition on Africa’s educational stage. Moroccan teacher Messaoud Ariba won first prize at the 2026 African Union Continental Teacher Awards on Wednesday in Mbabane, the capital of Eswatini.
The prestigious distinction was presented following the Pan-African Conference on Teacher Education (PACTED 2026), a platform dedicated to recognizing outstanding educators and celebrating their contributions to transforming education systems across the continent.
A teacher at the Ibnou Aachir school in the Taroudant Provincial Directorate of National Education, Messaoud Ariba was honored for his innovative project, "Math Kids,” which transforms mathematics lessons into theatrical, playful and interactive learning experiences.
His approach stood out among hundreds of projects assessed against 17 criteria. It uses games and theater to make mathematical concepts more accessible to students aged 11 to 13.
"With Math Kids, mathematics becomes a game rather than a challenge. Through theatrical activities, mathematical concepts are presented in an accessible and enjoyable way,” the teacher told MAP.
With 28 years of teaching experience, Messaoud Ariba welcomed the recognition with emotion. He also sees the award as a tribute to the daily dedication of Moroccan teachers, particularly those working in rural and remote areas.
Using Theater to Enhance Learning
Messaoud Ariba’s educational innovation extends beyond mathematics. He has also adapted the primary school science curriculum into three theatrical productions, each lasting 45 minutes and designed for two different grade levels.
For the teacher, theater is far more than entertainment. It is a valuable educational tool that can make learning more engaging, improve understanding and help students develop essential skills.
The latest recognition adds to an already distinguished career marked by several international awards. In 2024, Messaoud Ariba was honored at the Global Teacher Awards in New Delhi, which annually recognize educators for their excellence and contributions to educational innovation.
From Taroudant to Mbabane, his journey highlights the potential of Moroccan educational innovation to reach beyond national borders and inspire new teaching methods across Africa.
