Ethiopia and Djibouti are taking a new step toward strengthening their economic ties and regional cooperation. A strategic infrastructure project linking Damerjog in Djibouti to Dewele in Ethiopia has been officially announced in the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Djiboutian President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh and Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote.
At the heart of the initiative is the construction of a new pipeline designed to transport refined petroleum products, along with storage terminals at both ends of the route.
In a message posted on social media, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the initiative as a major strategic investment aimed at boosting trade between the two countries and improving the efficiency of the corridor linking Ethiopia to the Red Sea.
The project will be implemented through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings and the Dangote Group, placing African investment at the heart of this new energy infrastructure.
According to the Ethiopian Prime Minister, the project is expected to reduce logistics costs and transportation times while strengthening energy supply security. It is also intended to improve the efficiency and resilience of the Ethiopia-Djibouti corridor, a vital trade route for Ethiopia.
For Abiy Ahmed, the project goes beyond the construction of an oil transport infrastructure. It forms part of a broader vision for economic growth, regional integration and long-term cooperation between the two countries.
Through this investment, Addis Ababa and Djibouti aim to further deepen their economic ties, while the involvement of the Dangote Group highlights efforts to mobilize more African capital and expertise for strategic infrastructure projects across the continent.
