Tanzania and Namibia have taken a new step in strengthening their bilateral relations by signing four cooperation agreements aimed at expanding their strategic partnership and boosting economic development.
According to a statement issued by Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 21, the agreements cover several key areas, including defense, trade, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and decentralized cooperation between the Zanzibar Municipal Council and the Namibian city of Swakopmund.
The two countries also agreed to broaden their collaboration in strategic sectors such as food security, livestock farming, the blue economy, natural gas, and mineral resource development.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan emphasized that these new commitments are expected to enhance trade, attract greater investment, and promote the exchange of expertise and best practices for the benefit of both nations.
Alongside her Namibian counterpart, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, she highlighted the importance of improving connectivity between the two countries, particularly through the establishment of direct air links, to support trade, tourism, and investment flows.
This renewed partnership builds on the long-standing historical ties between Dodoma and Windhoek, which have been marked by sustained cooperation across various areas of socio-economic development.
Despite these strong relations, trade between the two countries has remained limited, reaching only $4 million in 2025, according to the International Trade Centre. This figure underscores the largely untapped economic potential that still exists between the two partners.
Following the signing of three memoranda of understanding in 2023 covering diplomacy, security, and energy, the latest agreements are expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral cooperation and contribute to a significant increase in trade exchanges.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah also called on relevant institutions and joint commissions to ensure the effective implementation of the agreements so that commitments can be translated into tangible results.
