Mauritania and France have strengthened their partnership through the signing of three cooperation agreements aimed at supporting sustainable development, climate action, and the protection of vulnerable populations.

The agreements were signed in Nouakchott during a ceremony attended by officials from both countries. They reflect a shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation around priorities related to the environment, justice, and social cohesion.

The first agreement is designed to support Mauritania’s efforts to combat the effects of climate change. It includes assistance for implementing commitments made under the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The second agreement concerns the “Aman” access-to-justice project. Backed by a €1 million grant, the program aims to improve citizens’ access to judicial services and strengthen women’s access to dispute-resolution mechanisms.

The third agreement provides an additional €7.2 million grant to support Mauritania’s National Adaptive Social Protection Strategy. The initiative focuses on several key priorities, including food security, healthcare, education, and social protection, with the goal of enhancing the resilience of the most vulnerable populations in the face of crises.

The agreements were signed on the Mauritanian side by Abdallah Ould Souleymane Ould Cheikh Sidia, Minister of Economy and Development, and Messouda Baham, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. France was represented by Emmanuel Besnier, French Ambassador to Mauritania, and Ignace Monkam-Daverat, Director of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Mauritania.

Through these new commitments, Nouakchott and Paris aim to deepen their cooperation in strategic sectors that promote sustainable development and social inclusion.
