Benin and Niger have taken a new step forward in their process of diplomatic rapprochement.

In a joint communiqué issued on June 16, 2026, the two countries officially endorsed the conclusions of a first round of technical discussions, thereby consolidating the progress made during the recent visit of Beninese President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey.

This momentum follows the June 2, 2026 meeting between the Beninese head of state and his Nigerien counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani.

The visit, which took place just days after Mr. Wadagni’s inauguration, was conducted in what was described as an atmosphere of “great cordiality.” It resulted in a nine-point joint communiqué confirming the shared determination to revive bilateral cooperation and establish a committee of experts tasked with examining the conditions for reopening the border, which has remained closed since the July 2023 crisis.

According to the communiqué, the technical work carried out over a fifteen-day period was considered “fruitful” by both sides. The Beninese and Nigerien delegations stated that they had submitted their findings to the relevant authorities, covering all the issues included in their mandate.

The experts are expected to meet again before the end of the week to refine their conclusions before presenting a joint report to the two heads of state. This stage is regarded as crucial for the continuation of the normalization process.

At the heart of the discussions is the intention to reopen the border between the two countries and to revive the Niger–Benin Joint Cooperation Commission. Both governments also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation in response to the challenges posed by terrorism and banditry in the sub-region.

Finally, the ongoing rapprochement could be further reinforced through a reciprocal visit by General Abdourahamane Tiani to Benin, the details of which are still to be determined through diplomatic channels.
