The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved financing of more than €103 million to strengthen access to electricity in Côte d’Ivoire.
This financing is part of the second phase of the Electricity System Reinforcement and Electricity Access Project (PROSER II), a strategic program supporting Côte d’Ivoire’s ambition to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030.
The project includes the electrification of 244 rural localities across the country, as well as the extension, reinforcement, and rehabilitation of distribution networks in Greater Abidjan, several inland cities, and twelve departmental capitals.
Ultimately, more than 107,000 households will be connected to the national electricity network. The program also includes the installation of 74,010 LED streetlights, helping to improve public safety, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
For Lamin Barrow, this new phase represents a major step forward in the modernization of Côte d’Ivoire’s electricity system. According to him, the project will provide communities with more reliable and higher-quality electricity while stimulating local economic development and improving living conditions for beneficiaries.
Beyond energy infrastructure, PROSER II incorporates a strong social component. Specific measures are planned to promote youth employability, strengthen women’s economic empowerment, and enhance the capacity of institutions in the electricity sector in areas such as planning, implementation, and project monitoring.
This new phase builds on the achievements of PROSER I, launched in 2020 with AfDB financing of €62.35 million. The program exceeded its initial objectives by electrifying 1,509 localities, constructing nearly 10,000 kilometers of power lines, and installing more than 1,500 transformers.
Upon completion of PROSER II, the authorities and their partners expect significant socio-economic benefits, greater resilience of the national energy system, and accelerated progress toward a low-carbon development model in Côte d’Ivoire.
