The use of generative artificial intelligence is growing steadily in Togo. According to the report “Global AI Diffusion Q1 2026 Trends and Insights” published by Microsoft, around 10.1% of Togolese people aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI tool during the first quarter of 2026.
The country has therefore crossed the symbolic 10% adoption threshold for the first time, compared to 9.3% in the second half of 2025 and 8.7% in the first half of the same year.
The study is based on aggregated and anonymized telemetry data to assess the use of tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot, while also taking into account internet connectivity, digital devices, and national populations.
This growth reflects the rise of digital usage in Togo, driven in particular by the democratization of smartphones, the expansion of mobile internet, and the growing interest among young people in tools that assist with writing, programming, and content creation.
With a rate of 10.1%, Togo joins a middle group of African countries that includes Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, and Niger.
On the continent, South Africa largely tops the ranking with 23.1% of users, ahead of Namibia (15.1%), Gabon, and Libya (15%).
Globally, the United Arab Emirates remains the leader in generative AI adoption with a rate of 70.1%, followed by Singapore (63.4%) and Norway (48.6%).
The report also highlights the growing gap between developed countries and those in the Global South. The average use of generative AI has now reached 27.5% in Northern countries, compared to 15.4% in Southern economies.
Among the main barriers to adoption in Africa are limited access to electricity, poor internet connectivity, and a lack of digital skills.
