On the sidelines of the inauguration of the Cité de la Démocratie and the opening of the Libreville International Forum, Gabon has taken a new step in strengthening its diplomatic positioning.
On Sunday, Vice President of the Government Hermann Immongault officially launched the construction works for the future United Nations headquarters in the Gabonese capital, according to the Gabonese Press Agency.
Presented as a strong symbol, the project reflects the authorities’ ambition to enhance the country’s role on the international stage.
“This is a strong gesture that demonstrates the Head of State’s commitment to placing Gabon on the path of development and contributing to the United Nations system,” said Hermann Immongault.
The future complex, which will cover an area of 14,000 square meters, is expected to be completed within 14 months. Through this initiative, Libreville clearly signals its intention to move from an observer role to that of an influential actor in issues of security and development in Africa.
A member of the United Nations since gaining independence in 1960, Gabon maintains close cooperation with the organization, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, governance, and social inclusion.
