Benin’s president-elect, Romuald Wadagni, will be officially sworn into office on Sunday, May 24. The announcement was made on Thursday by the President of the Constitutional Court, Dorothé Sossa, following a special plenary session dedicated to proclaiming the final results of the April 12 presidential election.

According to the country’s highest electoral authority, no appeals were filed within the five days following the publication of the provisional first-round results. These results confirmed the victory of the ticket formed by Romuald Wadagni and his running mate, Mariam Chabi Talata.

As a result, the Constitutional Court has validated Wadagni’s election as President of the Republic for a seven-year term, renewable once. His running mate, Mariam Chabi Talata, has also been elected as Vice President.

In accordance with the Beninese Constitution, the president-elect will take the oath of office before the National Assembly and the Supreme Court, under the authority of the Constitutional Court, prior to assuming his duties.

In Benin, the head of state also serves as head of government. He defines national policy, ensures the country’s security as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, appoints members of the executive, promulgates laws, and guarantees the proper functioning of state institutions.
