Denis Sassou N’Guesso, the outgoing president of the Republic of the Congo, has been re-elected following Sunday’s presidential election with 94.82% of the votes cast, according to results announced on Tuesday by the Ministry of the Interior.
According to Congolese authorities, the electorate included 3,167,099 registered voters, with a turnout rate reaching 84.65%. A total of seven candidates were in the race.
Among his main challengers were Joseph Kignoumbi Kia Mboungou, a member of parliament and leader of the party "La Chaîne,” running for the fifth time since 2002, as well as Anguios Nganguia Engambé, president of the Party for the Action of the Republic, participating for the fourth consecutive time since 2009.
The other candidates included Uphrem Dave Mafoula, who also ran in the 2021 presidential election, Vivien Romain Manangou, Destin Gavet from the Republican Movement, and Mabio Mavoungou Zinga.
The vote took place under the supervision of national observers appointed by the Constitutional Court, as well as international missions from the International Organization of La Francophonie and the African Union.
