More than 6.8 million Guinean voters are heading to the polls this Sunday for the first round of the presidential election, a vote presented as the final step in the process of returning to constitutional order.

This election comes after the adoption last September of a new Constitution, approved by referendum, which introduces major institutional reforms. These include extending the presidential term to seven years, renewable once, the creation of a Senate, and the establishment of a Special Court of Justice.

Nine candidates are in the running, including the transitional president, Mamadi Doumbouya, standing as an independent candidate, alongside Abdoulaye Yéro Baldé, Makalé Camara, Ibrahima Abé Sylla, Faya Lansana Millimouno, Abdoulaye Kourouma, Mohamed Nabé, Elhadj Bouna Keita, and Mohamed Chérif Tounkara.

Presented by the authorities as the culmination of the transition timetable, the presidential election scheduled for December 28 is expected to pave the way for the installation of elected institutions and the consolidation of the democratic process in Guinea, reports FAAPA.
