The Cameroonian government has denied information recently circulating on social media claiming that the country had been suspended from the African Union (AU) for failing to pay its statutory contributions, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance.

Cameroon has never been suspended from the AU, the ministry stressed. It described the allegations as inaccurate and unfounded, stating that they were likely to harm the image and credibility of the state.

According to the statement, the rumors stemmed from the circulation—out of its administrative context—of an internal AU correspondence dated October 13, 2025, addressed to Cameroon’s embassy in Addis Ababa. The letter recalled that as of October 8, 2025, the outstanding balance owed by Cameroon for its 2025 contribution amounted to approximately USD 2.8 million.

The ministry noted that, in line with a decision of the AU Executive Council, this situation temporarily exposed Cameroon to so-called preventive sanctions, which did not constitute an actual suspension or exclusion from the organization’s bodies.

As soon as the matter was brought to the government’s attention, the Directorate General of the Treasury issued, on November 10, 2025, two transfer orders in favor of the AU for a total amount exceeding USD 1.8 million, the statement said.

These payments resulted in the immediate lifting of the preventive sanctions mentioned in the October correspondence. A subsequent communication from the AU indicating the remaining balance expected for Cameroon’s 2025 contribution also confirms that no sanctions are attached to the outstanding amount.
