On September 22, 2025 in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, held a working session with Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Moroccan Sahara.
This meeting, requested by the latter, is part of the regular consultations ahead of the upcoming Security Council deadlines.
Represented also by Ambassador Omar Hilale, Morocco reiterated with consistency the clear and firm vision of the Kingdom, as defined by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The Kingdom reminded all that its position remains grounded in the immutable principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, inseparable from the identity of the State.
In this spirit, the Moroccan delegation emphasized that the only path to reach a realistic and durable political resolution to the regional dispute over the Sahara lies in the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, proposed in 2007 and widely praised by the international community as a serious and credible basis for negotiation.
This plan, built on consensus, provides for an expanded autonomy within the sovereignty of the Kingdom and respects its national unity.
During the meeting, Bourita also reaffirmed Morocco’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, while expressing the Kingdom’s ongoing readiness for constructive dialogue within the exclusive framework of the United Nations.
This approach is in continuity with Morocco’s proactive diplomacy, faithful to the royal vision advocating stability, legitimacy and international cooperation for lasting peace.
The discussion touched on recent diplomatic developments confirming the growing international momentum in favor of the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. A growing number of countries and regional organizations now recognize autonomy as the only realistic framework for a definitive solution.
This dynamic, stemming from the Royal Vision, sustained diplomatic work on this basis, and strengthened political credibility, illustrates the world’s recognition of Morocco’s constructive role in pursuing regional stability.
This New York meeting, held at a critical moment, reflects the coherence and consistency of the Kingdom’s foreign policy. It further consolidates Morocco’s diplomatic leadership under the impetus of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who continues to place the Sahara issue at the heart of the country’s national and international strategy, in respect of the law and the principles of the United Nations.
