The Nigerien government has adopted, during a Council of Ministers meeting, a draft decree establishing a National Cybersecurity Center. The goal is to bolster efforts to ensure the security of the country’s national cyberspace.
In 2022, Niger adopted a National Cybersecurity Strategy aimed at ensuring a secure and resilient cyberspace conducive to the nation’s economic and social development, according to the official statement.
The newly established National Cybersecurity Center is tasked with coordinating the implementation of the national strategy for securing and defending information systems as well as sensitive and critical infrastructures, as defined by the government. Its mission is to promote in Niger a secure and resilient digital environment that supports the country’s economic and social growth.
“The National Cybersecurity Center’s main mission is to coordinate the implementation of the national strategy for securing and defending information systems, as well as sensitive and critical infrastructures, in order to promote in Niger a secure and resilient digital environment conducive to its economic and social development,” the Council of Ministers’ report stated.
Niger ranks in the fourth category (T4) out of five in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Global Cybersecurity Index 2024, showing strong performance in terms of its regulatory framework.
