The Sudanese government has announced that the Adré border crossing, located on the frontier with Chad, will remain open for an additional four months in order to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected by the ongoing conflict.
"The Sudanese government has decided to extend, from September 1 to December 31, the opening of the Adré border post, at the Sudan–Chad frontier, to allow the passage of aid convoys managed by international humanitarian organizations,” the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The Sudanese government called on countries and humanitarian organizations to provide all necessary assistance to their citizens and to seize this extension as an opportunity to step up efforts and respond to the most urgent needs in the region.
This border post between Sudan and Chad is one of the most important in western Sudan. It provides an alternative route for the delivery of humanitarian aid to thousands of people affected by the war.
United Nations agencies say that keeping this post open will allow their humanitarian partners to deliver aid to people in need.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a conflict between the regular Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions more, both within the country and across its borders, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
