The 2025 edition of Benin Fashion Month has officially been launched in Cotonou, marking an ambitious initiative to promote Beninese and African creativity in the fashion sector. Throughout the month of July, Benin’s economic capital transforms into a true hub of textile innovation and sartorial refinement.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Jean-Michel Abimbola, Benin’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, praised the event as “a new platform celebrating the creative ingenuity of the African continent.” According to him, African fashion today symbolizes renewed dignity, assertive self-confidence, and a modernity rooted in cultural pride.
“This event is not merely a succession of runway shows. It is a living laboratory, a space for experimentation, a manifesto of styles where the future of our cultural expression takes shape,” he declared in front of an audience of designers, international guests, and industry representatives.
By officially designating July as Fashion Month, the government aims to institutionalize this momentum, offering stylists, designers, weavers, accessory makers, and other artisans an annual platform to showcase their expertise. This cultural policy also seeks to strengthen the local fashion ecosystem, in line with Benin’s ambition to project its creative identity beyond its borders.
On the agenda: masterclasses led by renowned professionals, panel discussions on the future of the African textile industry, B2B meetings, exhibitions, and of course, a grand closing fashion show featuring the latest creations from Beninese and African designers. The event aspires to position Cotonou as an emerging fashion capital on the continent, in synergy with the major fashion weeks of Dakar, Abidjan, and Johannesburg.
