President Yoweri Museveni is preparing to run for another term in Uganda. Now 80 years old, he has been in power since 1986.
Museveni’s decision to seek re-election marks four decades in office, making him the fourth African leader to remain in power for such a long period.
The ruling National Resistance Movement has confirmed his candidacy for the upcoming elections scheduled for January.
Museveni has previously amended the constitution to extend his time in office. Despite criticism over the use of patronage and security forces to consolidate power, he maintains that his continued leadership is the result of popular support.
His main opponent will be Bobi Wine, a former singer turned political challenger, who contested the results of the 2021 elections.
The electoral climate in Uganda is therefore expected to be tense.
