The World Bank has granted Senegal a concessional financing of 100 million US dollars, equivalent to over 56 billion CFA francs, to support the development of urban mobility in the country.

The World Bank's financial support aims to facilitate the launch of the first phase of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Project in Dakar, an ambitious initiative designed to deeply transform the public transport system in the capital and its surrounding areas. “By transforming urban mobility in Dakar, this project will create economic opportunities for 3.8 million people while allowing thousands of informal sector workers to access structured employment with social protection and better career prospects,” said Keiko Miwa, the World Bank’s Country Director for Senegal.

Such an initiative supports the government's vision of “inclusive growth by establishing integrated transport systems that enhance territorial development and strengthen connectivity between Dakar and regional economic hubs,” she added, noting that the sustainable urban mobility project in Dakar represents the first phase of a broader program supporting the country’s commitment to territorial development and sustainable growth.

The project will establish an integrated transport system connecting the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the Regional Express Train (TER) to restructured bus networks, while organizing and professionalizing informal transport operators and improving traffic management throughout the metropolitan area. It also includes plans for a second BRT line and essential infrastructure for urban mobility in secondary cities.

The operation will significantly reduce travel times on key corridors while laying the groundwork for future phases of urban mobility development, including potential expansion to regional hubs and additional public transit corridors.
