The Games of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), scheduled to take place from June 21 to 28 in Bamako, are expected to draw large participation. More than 500 participants, including athletes and coaches, will take part in this inaugural edition.

The announcement was made by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Sports, Roland Somda, during a press conference, noting that the Burkinabè delegation alone comprises 130 members, including athletes.

"These games aim to strengthen ties among Sahelian youth, promote peace, solidarity, and sporting excellence, and offer a platform for civic expression and motivation for AES youth,” he emphasized, highlighting that the events are meant to showcase the richness and diversity of Sahelian cultures.

"The ability to mobilize energy, foster human relationships, and build lasting friendships is well established. It is in this spirit that the first edition of the Games of the Alliance of Sahel States is being held,” the minister stated, adding that these games are more than just a sporting event. "They are a celebration of Sahelian identity, a space for dialogue among peoples, and a demonstration of our youth’s vitality,” he said.

Young participants from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will compete in nine disciplines: U17 football, traditional wrestling, arm wrestling, archery, judo, karate, taekwondo, kung fu wushu, and athletics.

The AES was created in September 2023 by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger following their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
