Delese Mimi Darko from Ghana has been appointed Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).
The announcement was made on the final day of the 2nd Ordinary Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the AMA, held in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
The conference brought together health officials from African countries to appoint the agency's leadership, approve its organizational structure, and advance the development of this continental body for medicine regulation in Africa.
Darko previously served as the Director-General of Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority. She was selected from over a hundred candidates after the call for applications opened in January 2025.
In 2019, the African Union General Assembly decided to establish the African Medicines Agency (AMA), a specialized agency of the African Union tasked with strengthening the capacity of its member states and regional economic communities to regulate medical products. Its mission is to improve access to quality, safe, and effective medicines across Africa.
