Burkinabe authorities decided on Thursday, in the Council of Ministers, to inaugurate the "Thomas Sankara Mausoleum and his 12 Companions" on May 17, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Communication and Culture, and spokesperson for the Burkinabe government, Gilbert Ouedraogo.
He stated that the ceremony will be held under the high patronage of the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
According to Minister Ouedraogo, the chosen date refers to a historic moment, May 17, 1983, which is considered the date the Democratic and Popular Revolution (RDP) was triggered following the arrest of Thomas Sankara, who was then Prime Minister of the People’s Salvation Council (CSP).
"The construction of the mausoleum aims, on one hand, to celebrate the memory of Captain Thomas Sankara and his 12 companions, and on the other hand, to contribute to the preservation, safeguarding, and promotion of the political legacy of the Father of the August 1983 Revolution," the government spokesperson recalled.
