Upon taking office, the new Malian Prime Minister outlined the key priorities of his mandate, centered on defense, reforms, and national unity.
Mali is entering a new phase of its Transition with the appointment of General Abdoulaye Maïga as Prime Minister. In his inaugural speech, the new head of government expressed his gratitude to the President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, while defining the priorities that will guide his administration.
During the inaugural Council of Ministers meeting, the President handed over a roadmap setting out the government's key objectives. National security emerges as the top priority, with a focus on strengthening defense capabilities to safeguard territorial gains and ensure stability amid ongoing challenges. In parallel, advancing political and institutional reforms is deemed crucial for consolidating the rule of law, enhancing the judiciary, and eradicating corruption—obstacles to the country’s modernization.
Special attention will also be directed toward economic recovery, aiming to meet the basic needs of the population. This ambition includes measures to improve the education system, create job opportunities—especially for youth—and provide expanded healthcare coverage supported by national solidarity policies. The social climate, marked by recurring tensions, must be addressed through inclusive dialogue and tailored responses to citizens' expectations.
On the diplomatic front, strengthening ties with partners who respect Malian sovereignty is a priority. The government is committed to defending national interests while ensuring greater protection for Malians living abroad. As part of this strategy, the implementation of the roadmap for the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) will be a strategic priority to solidify Mali’s role on the regional stage. Ultimately, the success of the Transition hinges on organizing transparent and peaceful elections, a prerequisite for restoring constitutional order.
Abdoulaye Maïga emphasized the importance of preserving Malian sovereignty, guided by three fundamental principles set by President Goïta: respect for Mali’s independence, strategic choices, and partners, as well as the defense of the people’s vital interests. While expressing his commitment to improving the living conditions of Malians, the Prime Minister clarified that budgetary decisions will prioritize security, even if it means delaying other projects.
In line with the Transition’s commitment to financial austerity, Abdoulaye Maïga announced measures to reduce state expenditures. He praised President Goïta’s initiatives, noting that two-thirds of the President’s sovereign funds are allocated to social programs, and vowed to follow this example by dedicating a significant portion of his own funds to charitable efforts.
The Prime Minister concluded by calling for national unity, a critical factor for the success of the Transition. "More than just a vision, the realization of 'Mali-Kura' (systemic refoundation) is a prerequisite, without which our efforts risk being in vain," he declared, emphasizing that internal divisions only serve the interests of Mali’s adversaries. He urged all citizens, regardless of differences, to rally around this collective ambition.
With a clear roadmap and unwavering commitment, General Abdoulaye Maïga aims to align his tenure with the initiatives launched by the President of the Transition. As he concluded with determination: "Together, we will achieve 'Mali-Kura'."
