Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga made an official visit to Morocco as part of his campaign for the presidency of the African Union (AU) Commission, a position set to be contested in February 2025 during the summit of heads of state and government in Addis Ababa.
Raila Odinga, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and a staunch advocate for Pan-African ideals, seeks to succeed the current AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat. Competing against him are three other candidates: Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, Anil Gayan of Mauritius, and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.
During this significant visit, Mr. Odinga announced that he had secured Morocco’s support for his candidacy. This backing also extends to Morocco’s Latifa Akharbach, who is running for the position of AU Commission Vice Chairperson, a post contested by candidates from Algeria, Libya, and Egypt. Welcomed by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Raila Odinga emphasized the historic significance of Kenya-Morocco relations. "I am delighted to return to Morocco.
Kenya and Morocco share a longstanding historical relationship," he stated. In productive discussions, the two leaders addressed crucial issues for the continent, including combating climate change, managing migration, and creating jobs for Africa’s youth. Mr. Odinga underscored the strategic importance of renewable energy for Africa's development: "Africa has the world's greatest potential in renewable energy—be it solar, wind, or hydrogen. These resources must be harnessed to advance our continent." For his part, Nasser Bourita praised Kenya’s commitment to working alongside Morocco to address continental challenges, highlighting the impact of Morocco’s return to the AU in 2017 on African dynamics.
A Partnership at the Heart of African Challenges
The discussions underscored a shared vision for addressing Africa’s pressing challenges. Migration, a particularly dire issue for young Africans seeking to cross the Mediterranean, took center stage. Raila Odinga stressed, "We must create opportunities at home to prevent our youth from risking their lives on dangerous journeys." On climate issues, both countries agreed on the necessity of enhanced cooperation to mitigate the impacts of recurrent natural disasters and promote sustainable solutions, particularly through renewable energy.
As part of his campaign for the AU presidency, Raila Odinga advocates for a more influential institution on the global stage. His approach aligns with Moroccan aspirations, as highlighted by Bourita: "Morocco shares this vision of a stronger, more cohesive continent." Since its return to the AU, Morocco has positioned itself as a key player in shaping ambitious continental policies. This momentum could be further bolstered by Odinga's candidacy, seen as a catalyst for progress and unity.
This visit illustrates the potential for deepened partnership between Rabat and Nairobi in tackling Africa’s challenges. With the AU election approaching, Morocco’s support for Raila Odinga reflects a shared commitment to fostering visionary leadership for the continent.
Together, Morocco and Kenya emerge as strategic players capable of shaping an African future characterized by stability, prosperity, and strengthened cooperation. Through joint initiatives and sustained dialogue, these two nations appear poised to build an exemplary model of collaboration in service of the continent.
