"Africa must be at the heart of the UN's priorities to transform the challenges the continent faces into opportunities for development and prosperity." This was one of the key messages delivered by Morocco, voiced by its Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, during the Summit of the Future in New York.

Akhannouch reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to implementing the United Nations’ Pact for the Future, aiming to revitalize the multilateral system in service of peace, equitable, and inclusive development.

"It is essential to place peace, stability, and development at the core of collective action, which requires a comprehensive and integrated approach based on trust, dialogue, and mutual respect," he stated at the summit initiated by the UN Secretary-General.

In his speech, attended by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Akhannouch emphasized that the summit, taking place amid a globally complex context, provides an opportunity to renew the international community's commitment to the UN Charter and to reaffirm collective efforts to strengthen the multilateral system.

"Renewed multilateral action calls for real political will to act collectively and for inclusive solutions based on equity and solidarity," he added.

He also recalled King Mohammed VI’s call during the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Marrakech, advocating for the reform of institutions and frameworks of the multilateral system to reflect the socio-economic and political changes.

In this regard, Akhannouch reiterated that Africa must be central to the UN's actions to turn the continent's challenges into opportunities for growth and prosperity.

Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, Akhannouch mentioned Morocco's ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030 and to increase investments in renewable energies, including green hydrogen, to ensure that 52% of the country's energy mix is sourced from clean energy by 2030.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Morocco's advancements in social protection, as well as efforts to strengthen food and health sovereignty.

The Summit of the Future, part of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, brought together heads of state and government, along with representatives from international organizations and civil society.

During the summit, UN member states adopted a Pact for the Future, which includes commitments to reduce the digital divide and accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals.
