Residents of Abidjan will have access to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in 2027.

“BRT project will ensure smooth urban transportation in Greater Abidjan. It will also allow between 300,000 to 500,000 people to travel daily between the communes of Bingerville and Yopougon,” said Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé.

With an estimated cost of $440 million, this project is the country’s first BRT, noted the head of the Ivorian government.

“It is an ambitious project that will transform our urban landscape and significantly improve the quality of life for our people, especially in terms of reducing travel times, improving air quality, and boosting the economy,” stated Robert Beugré Mambé.

The Abidjan BRT, stretching 20 kilometers, will feature 21 modern stations and will be equipped with over 100 articulated buses, 100% electric. This service could create around 500 direct jobs.

In addition to reducing traffic congestion and pollution, the BRT is expected to stimulate economic development in the neighborhoods it serves by improving accessibility and attracting new investments. Local authorities hope that this project will also encourage residents to use public transport more, thus reducing dependence on private vehicles and contributing to a more sustainable environment.

The implementation of this transport system is part of a broader strategy to modernize the city’s infrastructure and meet the growing needs for urban mobility. Strong commitments have been made by the project’s financial and technical partners to ensure that deadlines are met and the project is completed with high quality.
