According to the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Georges Pierre Lesjongard, Mauritius aims for zero carbon emissions in energy production by 2050.

Speaking at the opening of the first international conference on Smart Energy Systems and Artificial Intelligence (SESAI), focused on the development of advanced technologies to transform the energy sector, in Balaclava (northwest), Lesjongard emphasized the government's vision to transform Mauritius into a clean, sustainable, and smart island.

Clear objectives have been set for 60% of electricity to come from renewable energy sources and for the use of coal to be gradually phased out by 2030, to increase energy efficiency by 10%, and to make the green energy industry an economic pillar, the minister stated.

"We also aim for net-zero emissions by 2050," he specified.

Additionally, Georges Pierre Lesjongard stated that his ministry is aware of the need to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy by launching numerous initiatives in the field of renewable energy and investing in advanced technologies for the development of a smarter grid that promotes the penetration of renewable energy.
