The government of Burkina Faso has announced the holding of national assemblies on May 25 and 26 to decide on the continuation of the transition, which ends on July 1, 2024.

"National assemblies are convened on May 25 and 26 in Ouagadougou starting at 8 a.m. (GMT and local time) in the conference hall of Ouaga 2000," stated a communiqué read on national television (RTB), signed by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Émile Zerbo.

"These assemblies will allow representatives of the nation's active forces to deliberate on the continuation of the transition, which is set to end on July 1, 2024, according to the charter of October 14, 2022," the communiqué specified.

The national assemblies on May 25 and 26 will bring together "representatives of civil society, political parties, and the Defense and Security Forces (FDS), who will gather to review the past months (…) and decide whether to continue the transition and what form it should take," explained the minister in an interview broadcast by RTB.

In October 2022, a transition charter was adopted during the first national assemblies, establishing a president, a government, and a legislative assembly, and setting the transition duration at 21 months.

At the end of April, Burkina Faso's Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) had passed a law calling for the convening of national assemblies.
