The upcoming legislative and regional elections will no longer take place on April 20 as initially planned. The new dates have not yet been announced. These will experience a "slight" delay, according to the government.

"The government will proceed with a slight rearrangement of the schedule for the legislative and regional elections initially set for April 20, 2024," reports the local press, citing the presidency.

This postponement follows the debates sparked by the recent law passed by the assembly, which is intended to transition the country into a parliamentary system.

Faure Gnassingbé has indeed requested a second reading of the text by the assembly. He has thus encouraged "deputies to remain attentive to all concerned stakeholders, with the aim of considering all contributions that serve to enrich the Constitution," reports the presidency.
