Closed since March 18 due to a severe heatwave in the country, South Sudan's schools will reopen their doors on April 2.

According to the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, the government has called on educators to make arrangements to ensure safe learning for students. "Education is vital, and ensuring safe learning environments for our children is a priority. Let's ensure the safety of children as classes resume," the ministry stated in a press release. The goal is to guarantee a safe resumption.

Among the measures to be implemented are maintaining activities in the playgrounds early in the morning or preferably indoors, ventilating classrooms, providing water to learners during school hours, and monitoring children, particularly the youngest, for signs of heat exhaustion.

Teachers have also been advised to alert emergency services at the first sign of heatstroke.

In addition to these measures, the Ministry of General Education and Instruction emphasized the importance of ongoing communication between schools, parents, and local health authorities. Schools are encouraged to develop contingency plans for any further environmental challenges that may arise during the school year.

The reopening comes after consultations with meteorological experts, who have indicated a gradual decrease in temperatures, making it feasible for students to return to classrooms. However, the ministry has urged schools to remain vigilant and adapt to any changes in weather patterns swiftly.

To further support the reopening, the government is working on providing additional resources to schools, including emergency cooling systems and first aid training for teachers, to better prepare them for any heat-related emergencies.

Parents and guardians are also being advised to ensure their children are dressed appropriately for the weather, encouraging the use of light, breathable clothing and hats to protect against the sun. They are also urged to educate their children on staying hydrated and recognizing the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

As schools prepare to welcome back students, the ministry has expressed its commitment to closely monitor the situation and provide any necessary support to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff members. The community's cooperation and adherence to the recommended safety measures are crucial for a successful and uninterrupted learning experience for the students of South Sudan.
