After eight months of suspension, social media platforms are once again accessible in Gabon.
The High Authority for Communication (HAC) announced on Saturday that it had lifted the restriction, which had been in place since February 17, following a series of reforms aimed at strengthening digital regulation.
According to a statement issued by the regulatory body, the decision follows the adoption of several legal measures designed to adapt the country's regulatory framework to technological developments. Key measures include the revision of the Communication Code, the restructuring of the HAC and the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content.
At the same time, Gabonese authorities have strengthened their cooperation with major international digital platforms. Operational agreements have been concluded with TikTok, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as YouTube.
These agreements now give the HAC access to the platforms' priority reporting mechanisms, enabling faster processing and removal of illegal content, the statement said.
Cooperation is expected to continue with the upcoming arrival in Libreville of delegations from TikTok and Meta for further discussions with Gabonese authorities.
Following the restoration of access, the HAC has called on internet users to act responsibly in their online interactions. It urged them to engage in discussions that respect the rights of others and contribute to a healthier and more constructive digital environment.
