Gabon officially launched its fifth-generation (5G) networks on Monday, October 26, marking a major step forward in the development of telecommunications and the modernization of its digital economy.

The launch took place on the sidelines of the first edition of Gabon Digital Week, held from October 26 to 30. The new technology aims to improve internet connectivity, accelerate digital exchanges and foster the emergence of new services.

During the launch ceremony, Célestin Kadjidja, Chairman of the Regulatory Council of Gabon's Electronic Communications and Postal Regulatory Authority (ARCEP Gabon), announced that the institution had given the green light for the deployment of 5G. The country's two mobile operators have been allocated a broad range of frequencies to introduce the technology.

According to Kadjidja, 5G represents a significant technological advancement that could transform people's daily habits and meet the growing connectivity needs of businesses.

A Technology with Multiple Applications

Beyond faster internet speeds, 5G paves the way for a wide range of new applications. Among the potential uses is Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), which provides high-speed internet connectivity to households, particularly in sparsely populated areas. This solution can serve as an alternative to Fiber to the Home (FTTH) where fiber deployment is difficult or costly.

For his part, Zouheir Jorio, Managing Director of Moov Africa Gabon Télécom, emphasized that this innovation goes beyond a purely technical advancement. It is expected to deliver more efficient connectivity and create new opportunities for citizens, young people, entrepreneurs and content creators.

Libreville and Port-Gentil Lead the Rollout

During its initial phase, the 5G network is available in Libreville and Port-Gentil, Zouheir Jorio confirmed. Its gradual expansion could benefit several sectors, including education, entrepreneurship, creative industries, video gaming and emerging digital professions.

The launch marks the culmination of a process initiated more than a year ago by the government and ARCEP. It forms part of the national strategy to accelerate digital transformation, bring technological innovations closer to users' needs and strengthen Gabon's technological capabilities.

The challenge now will be to gradually expand access to this technology and encourage its adoption by households and businesses.
