Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are working to establish a common visa system designed to facilitate travel for supporters during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This initiative aims to allow football fans to move more easily between the three host countries during the competition.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of the East African Community (EAC), during an inspection visit to the Pamoja Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania, one of the venues selected to host matches during the tournament.
Also serving as Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Kadaga explained that the three countries were developing a specific framework to simplify travel formalities for supporters throughout the competition.
Beyond the sporting aspect, this project could promote regional tourism and stimulate economic activity. Hotels, travel agencies, transport companies and other service providers could particularly benefit from the influx of visitors coming to attend matches in the different countries and discover their tourist attractions.
However, the impact of this initiative will depend on the final terms of the agreement and its effective implementation at border crossings. East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member Abdullah Makame stressed that the effectiveness of the system would depend in particular on the visa rules adopted and the conditions under which they are implemented.
Furthermore, the delegation was informed that construction work on the Pamoja Stadium in Arusha, designed to accommodate approximately 32,500 spectators, had reached 95% completion.
The 36th edition of AFCON will take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. This edition will mark a first in the history of the competition, which will be jointly hosted by three countries.
