Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, reiterated on Tuesday in New York his country’s position supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.

“Our position has not changed” regarding the Moroccan character of the Sahara, Mr. Traoré told the press following a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Referring to the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, the Burkinabè minister stressed that “Morocco has proposed a plan that has received the endorsement of the United Nations.”

“We continue to support this Autonomy Plan. This is our position and we remain faithful to this position,” he said.

Mr. Traoré also welcomed the importance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s Initiative aimed at facilitating access to the Atlantic Ocean for Sahel countries.

He added in this regard that “the task forces are in place in the various countries concerned,” noting that the meeting with Mr. Bourita was an opportunity “to discuss the next steps that we will take together,” Faapa reports.
