Cabo Verde reaffirmed its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara, as well as its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan presented as the solution to the regional dispute.

This position was reiterated in a joint statement signed following talks between Cabo Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, José Filomeno de Carvalho Dias Monteiro, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Cabo Verde’s foreign minister also welcomed the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara. He also welcomed the international momentum in favor of the Autonomy Plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, driven, according to him, by King Mohammed VI.

For his part, Nasser Bourita thanked his counterpart for Cabo Verde’s “constant and firm” support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara. The Moroccan minister also welcomed the opening of Cabo Verde’s Consulate General in Dakhla in August 2022.

The two officials reaffirmed their determination to consolidate bilateral relations, based on friendship, cooperation and solidarity, and to further strengthen the partnership between Rabat and Praia.

With this in mind, Morocco expressed its readiness to support Cabo Verde in several priority sectors, including health, tourism, maritime fisheries, agriculture, the blue economy and the energy transition.

The two sides finally agreed to hold the third session of the Joint Cooperation Commission during the first quarter of 2027. This meeting is expected to identify new partnership opportunities and give new impetus to bilateral cooperation in various fields.
