Morocco and Mauritania are strengthening their cooperation in the field of road infrastructure.

Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and his Mauritanian counterpart, Minister of Equipment and Transport Ely Ould El Veirik, signed a framework agreement on Monday in Rabat for the rehabilitation and widening of the road linking Nouakchott to Nouadhibou, over a distance of 480 kilometers.

This project aims in particular to ensure better connectivity between the two countries’ road networks and facilitate the movement of transporters and economic operators. It is also expected to help boost trade and investment between Morocco and Mauritania.

As part of this agreement, a joint engineering office will be established in Mauritania to monitor and supervise the work. This initiative is part of the implementation of the directives of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The project also pays particular attention to the resilience of road infrastructure to the effects of climate change.

For his part, Mauritanian Minister Ely Ould El Veirik said that the agreement reflects a participatory approach between the two countries. This should help ensure compliance with technical standards, improve coordination in infrastructure maintenance and promote the sharing of expertise and skills.
