At 31, Seko Fofana has decided to bring his international career with Côte d’Ivoire to an end. The midfielder announced his decision on Monday, after making 34 appearances for the Elephants and scoring seven goals.
"It is time for me to turn the page,” the Ivorian international wrote on social media, expressing his "pride” and "gratitude” for having had the opportunity to represent his country.
The highlight of his international career will remain the AFCON 2023 triumph, hosted by Côte d’Ivoire in 2024. Fofana described the continental title as "a childhood dream” that came true. Despite his retirement, the midfielder says he will "always be the Elephants’ number one supporter.”
During that victorious campaign, Seko Fofana established himself as one of the key figures in the Ivorian midfield, alongside Franck Kessié and Jean-Michaël Seri.
The former Lens player also took part in the 2026 World Cup. He started in the Elephants’ victory over Ecuador (1-0), then came on during the match against Germany, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. He did not play again in the tournament. Côte d’Ivoire was eventually eliminated by Norway (2-1) in the round of 32.
After spells at Udinese, RC Lens and in the Saudi league, Seko Fofana is currently continuing his club career at FC Porto, where he is playing on loan from Rennes.
His departure thus marks the end of an important chapter in his history with the Elephants, highlighted by an African championship title won on home soil.
