Bamako is preparing to host the first edition of the National Contemporary Art Market, from November 26 to December 5. Organized alongside the Bamako Encounters, this new event aims to bring together artists, gallery owners, collectors and cultural professionals, with a stated objective: to give real commercial momentum to Malian artistic creation.
Mali wants to give a new dimension to its visual arts sector. The government has confirmed the organization of the first edition of the National Contemporary Art Market, which will be held from November 26 to December 5 at the Amadou Hampâté Bâ Palace of Culture in Bamako.
Held under the theme "Art: A Weapon of Resilience for the Peoples of the AES,” the event will bring together artists, gallery owners, collectors, cultural professionals, partners and art enthusiasts through exhibitions, professional meetings and exchanges.
Beyond the visibility given to artists, the project has an economic ambition: to structure the chain from the creation to the acquisition of artworks. The authorities thus aim to contribute to the professionalization of the sector and the development of cultural and creative industries in Mali.
A Call for Malian Artists
Since September 7, the National Directorate of Cultural Action has opened a call for works aimed at visual artists based in the country’s various regions.
Applications are open until October 10 at 5 p.m. GMT.
Painting, drawing, engraving, sculpture, contemporary photography, video, digital arts, multimedia creation and artistic design are among the disciplines concerned. Each artist may submit up to three works.
The proposed works must be original, have been created between 2020 and 2026, and be available for possible exhibition or sale. Applicants must also provide the technical specifications of their works as well as their price. A committee will then carry out the selection.
This price requirement is not insignificant. It clearly reflects the commercial purpose of the new event, which aims to bring Malian creation closer to buyers and collectors.
Alongside the Bamako Encounters
The National Market will take place at the same time as the 15th edition of the Bamako Encounters, African Biennale of Photography, scheduled from November 26, 2026, to January 26, 2027.
Created in 1994, the Bamako Encounters have established themselves as a major event for African photography and visual creation. For this new edition, held under the theme "Refabulation(s),” exhibitions, screenings, conferences, training sessions and professional meetings are on the programme.
The official selection brings together 49 artists from 26 countries, including 25 women, according to Mali’s Ministry of Culture. The event is aimed at artists from the continent, the diaspora and creators of African descent.
Its curatorial direction is led by Armelle Dakouo. Alongside this international dimension, the new National Market aims to provide a component specifically dedicated to Malian artists and the commercialization of their works.
Turning Visibility into Opportunities
The challenge is therefore twofold: to benefit from the attendance and professional networks associated with the Bamako Encounters while creating a space dedicated to the sale and acquisition of works produced in Mali.
It now remains to be seen how many artists will be selected, the budget allocated to the event, the mechanisms planned for transactions and, above all, the sales targets set by the organizers.
For ten days, the two events will take place simultaneously in Bamako. This will provide Malian creators with an opportunity to gain greater exposure among professionals, collectors and the international public.
With this first National Market, Mali is therefore no longer seeking only to showcase its artists: it also wants to create the conditions for their works to find buyers and for contemporary creation to become a genuine market.
