After eight years with the Lions of Teranga, Édouard Mendy has decided to bring his international career to an end. At 34, the Senegalese goalkeeper leaves the national team with 59 caps and a record highlighted notably by Senegal’s historic triumph at AFCON 2021.

Édouard Mendy will no longer wear the Senegal jersey. The 34-year-old goalkeeper has reportedly decided to retire from international football after 59 appearances for the Lions of Teranga, local media reported on Sunday.

According to the same source, the Senegalese goalkeeper has already informed Patrick Vieira of his decision, as the former French international is set to take charge of the national team.

Eight Years Serving the Lions

First called up to the national team in 2018, Édouard Mendy gradually established himself as the last line of defense for the Lions of Teranga.

His greatest achievement remains the AFCON 2021 triumph, played in Cameroon in 2022, when Senegal won the continental title for the first time in its history.

The goalkeeper also took part in the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco, played in January 2026 in Rabat. His journey with the Lions also took him to the biggest international stages.

After playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Mendy took part in the 2026 World Cup, held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A Club Career Still at the Highest Level

While Mendy is leaving the national team, his professional career continues. The Senegalese goalkeeper currently plays in Saudi Arabia, where he has just enjoyed a particularly successful season.

He notably won the AFC Champions League and was named the best goalkeeper in the Saudi Pro League.

This recognition adds to an already distinguished international career. Édouard Mendy is also among the goalkeepers nominated for the Yashin Trophy, awarded each year to the best goalkeeper in the world.

At 34, the African champion is thus closing the chapter on his time with the Lions of Teranga, leaving behind a national team marked by his presence and by one of the greatest successes in Senegalese football history.
