Mali will revive one of the biggest sporting events in its history from August 7 to 16, 2026. Bamako will host the first edition of the Autonomous Sports Biennale since 1983, marking the return of an interregional competition that has been suspended for more than four decades.
Originally scheduled for September 2025, the event was postponed due to scheduling and organizational constraints. The government has now selected a new 10-day period to bring the iconic competition back to life.
Delegations from the country's 19 regions and the District of Bamako will compete in five disciplines: athletics, basketball, football, traditional wrestling, and chess. This edition will be the first to bring together representatives of the country's new territorial organization established under the 2023 administrative reform.
The Sports Biennale traces its origins to the National Youth Weeks, launched in 1962 shortly after independence. In 1970, the event evolved into a Biennale of Arts, Culture, and Sports, held every two years, before later becoming an exclusively sporting competition. The first three autonomous editions were held in Ségou (1979), Mopti (1981), and Sikasso (1983).
The 2026 edition therefore marks the return of the event in its sports-only format, the first in 43 years. Unlike previous editions, which were hosted in regional capitals, the revived competition will take place in Bamako.
Beyond the sporting competition, the authorities see the Biennale as a tool for national cohesion, encouraging exchanges between young people from different regions and strengthening their sense of belonging to a single nation.
In a country where nearly half of the population is under the age of 15, the event also carries strategic importance for the country's youth. Details regarding the competition schedule, selected venues, number of participants, qualification process, and event budget will be announced at a later date.
