Kenya has taken a new step in the fight against cross-border crime.
On Saturday, the Kenyan Police Service announced the creation of a specialized unit tasked with combating criminal networks operating across borders and strengthening security at the country's main points of entry.
Known as the Counter-Organized Immigration Crime Team (COICT), the new unit is made up of 29 frontline investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). After completing intensive training, the officers have been deployed to several strategic border posts.
According to the DCI, the initiative is intended to stay ahead of the increasingly sophisticated methods used by criminal organizations that exploit borders, immigration systems, and vulnerable populations to expand their illegal activities.
Operating under the supervision of the Serious Crime Unit, the COICT will be responsible for combating human trafficking, migrant smuggling, document forgery, and other forms of transnational organized crime.
