Chad has announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), denouncing what it describes as "double standards" in the administration of international justice.
On Monday, the Chadian government announced its decision to withdraw from the ICC, criticizing the institution's effectiveness and what it considers to be an uneven application of international justice.
In a statement issued by the government spokesperson, the authorities said the decision followed "a thorough review" of the Court's performance since it began operations in 2002.
"This decision is the outcome of a thorough review of the functioning of the International Criminal Court since it began operating in 2002, as well as its record, whose effectiveness remains limited and inconsistent," the statement said.
The Chadian government specifically accused the Court of focusing disproportionately on the African continent, arguing that its actions do not reflect a balanced approach to international justice.
The announcement marks a new phase in relations between N'Djamena and the ICC, whose decisions and procedures have long been criticized by several African states.
