Spain are world champions once again. After a tight and hard-fought final against Argentina, La Roja claimed a 1-0 victory after extra time on Sunday at New York–New Jersey Stadium, lifting the second World Cup title in their history after their triumph in South Africa in 2010.
Luis de la Fuente's side finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute through Ferran Torres. Coming off the bench, the Spanish forward scored the winning goal with a powerful strike, securing another star for his country after an outstanding tournament.
Dominant throughout the match, Spain created the majority of the scoring chances and controlled the tempo against an Argentina side reduced to ten men following the late dismissal of Enzo Fernández. The defending world champions were unable to turn the game around despite a final push in the closing minutes.
The triumph confirms the outstanding momentum of Spanish football. After winning the UEFA European Championship in 2024, La Roja add another prestigious title to their honors and become the first nation to simultaneously hold the men's and women's World Cup titles.
For Argentina and Lionel Messi, however, the final marks the end of their dream of defending the trophy they won in 2022.
